TOMTOM iPhone Car kit

Today my new TOMTOM car kit arrived. I was quite impressed how fast TOMTOM delivered it (4 Days since I hit the order now button), after I read at the apple online-store that the delivery would take 4 to 6 weeks. So new toy for me,.. clearly, as the nerd I am, I tested it right away after I fetched it from the Ups warehouse. What can I say, good job TOMTOM, it made a huge difference in signal strength and the behavior of my Navigon GPS app.

How did I notice ?
Well last friday I had been to Frankfurt, because I had to go to Darmstadt, to visit a customer of one of my customers for a training event they booked me for. Because Darmstadt is near by Frankfurt I rented a car on the Frankfurt Airport at Sixt car-rental,.. like always I got a crappy Gamin Nüvi with the car, so I figured lets run a contest. Garmin Nüvi vs. Iphone with Navigon App and no carkit. 45 Kilometers ride seemed to be a good test.

What can I say the App lost signal from time to time, but the route was far better than the route Garmin provided, and the command for turns came much earlier than on the Garmin. But the signal loss was a little bit annoying.

So today I got to test the device together with the App,.. no signal loss at all, and faster response of Navigon App to “failures” at drivers side.

I am impressed.

Bought it, plugged it in and took off on a 2400 mile round trip. Absolutely no problems. I found it very intuitive as I didn’t even bother to read the manual. I’m sure it does more than I used it for, but as a navigator it was terrific. Glad I paid a little extra to get the voice guidance model – nice to be reminded when turns are coming up. Only complaint is that the price dropped 2 weeks after I bought, but I guess that’s the way it goes with electronics. Highly recommend.
